WIP - Penal Legionnaire

Can't wait to see this guy finished. The detail on the shackles is amazing, and you've got the folds in the jumpsuit spot on.

If you are wondering what gun to give him start with where he got it? Did he buy it of a gunsmith or gangster after his escape, in which case an SMG would be perfect, but auto rifles, shotguns and carbines (see revised Inq armory) would be equaly valid (I could see him weildind a 40k version of the Beowolf .50 cal carbine). If it was issued to him in the penal legion a mass produced lasgun would better fit the bill. I'd advocate a short barreled high rate of fire version (an SMLasG if you will). Something like:

basic . B . Sn/Sm(2/3)/Full(8) . - . 2D6(+3 for 2X ammo consumption) . 60 . 2 . 25

Great start, it's good to see all the self-sculpting going on now (sign of the economic times? Or that GW need to broaden their range? I dunno).

For me it is the case that I have no money to spare buying models (I need/want to make up some generic legs and bodies and what have you and then I can bang these things out for pennies whenever I want one) and partly it's because I don't want to give GW (I just checkef the current prices, wtf?) £17.60 for one model!

QuoteI love the manacles on that guy. They might hinder his walking a little bit, but they aren't so heavy, and his pants seem baggy enough to soften it a bit.

Indeed, his pants seem rather too baggy, on the right legs. Do you intend to smooth that off? Or is the guy just suffering from penal legions recieving arse-end of munitorium deliveries?

I was waiting for someone to say that. The folds and creases are taken directly from a photograph of some fella in dungarees but overalls look virtually the same too and that's what this chap is wearing; prison issue dungarees, one size fits all.

Fair enough.

Put it this way, when you're sending millions of people out to die and soak up bullets do you really want them being light on their feet? That's why I added the chains to make it look as if he had a full set of shackles on but managed to survive/escape and broke them.

My thoughts have been that it could be some piece of junk he got issued with or more likely it's a piece of junk he managed to scavenge. a las weapon of some type sounds almost right but I think a solid shot weapon is more brutal which fits the model better; and whilst a las weapon should be equally as rugged and durable I think finding a crappy old smg of some kind conveys more of a cobbled together/ad hoc sort of image.

I'm sure you can cobble up a 54mm AK look alike. That'd fit the image perfectly.

Caralinus

I've been looking at a few different soviet weapons from the 2nd World War as I think the agricultural look seems right, just things which do a job; the PPSh-41 and the LMG-RPD-44 fit the bill.

Just a few little bits to finish off and this chap will be ready for painting.

New head. 1. I hate doing noses. 2. His left eyebrow fell off! 3. Since I messed up the ears last time I've used plasticard in a similar fasion to the way I did the ears for Gogsnik. They just need some drilling out and some putty to finish them off.

I've used some Catachan hands which work out about the right size and I just need to tidy the wrists up. I've used some terminator armour to make his explosive collar.

For the autogun I've used a flamer as the base with a kroot rifle barrel and some ork shoota bullets.

He comes out at 57mm high and since the head on that Inquisitor has shrunk down a bit (it's only blu-tacked into place) he only stands at 51mm. That makes the trooper around 6 foot but I think that's okay.

awesome work, add a few details and this one is gonna be a real eyecatcher.

Simeon Blackstar

That's going to look excellent once you've sanded the face smooth!  One point - the gun looks fantastic, but the sling is far too short to look as good as the rest of it.  Might be an idea to make a new one out of tomato puree tube foil (but keep the bits of fur!).

Caralinus

Thanks for the comments.

I see what you mean about the sling, I suppose the gun is too short to really need one anyway but I thought it gave it a more 'lived in' appearance if you get what I mean. I think I could splice a bit of plasticard in though to lengthen it up.

Nice work!

On the one hand that gun has a very small number of shots, I'd guess it has some sort of vertical clip (yes really, a clip) that sinks into the gun as it is used up. On the other hand those are some big bullets. Might I humbly suggest the high calibre carbine from the Revised Inquisitor Armoury as the model seems to fit the profile perfectly.

Caralinus

Yeah, it probably only has about ten rounds or so per clip. My aim was to create something that looked cheaply manufactured but durable; I see this legionnaire as having founding a rusty old gun in a barn somewhere while he's been trying to scarper from the battle zone.

It is definitely coming along nicely. I really like the design for the autogun/machine pistol type weapon.

Caralinus

Thanks. I've added in a length of plasticard and it does look much better and the ears won't need that much GS either so I'm pretty happy with the way they've turned out, I'll be using that method in future.

I haven't managed to get much done in the last few months, an average temperature of five degrees in my room has not been very conducive to painting. I've made a start on the first intitial base colours and since I was uploading some other pictures thought I might as well do this one too.

Well it's been a while but this project isn't dead yet!

Now that the weather has warmed up I've been working on the Legionnaire again and I'm fairly happy with the way he's coming along. I've still got a fair bit (as usual) to do before he's finished but you'll be able to see the general look of the finished model.

I wanted the skin tone to be a little different so he's a kinda browny grey colour and he's also pretty filthy. I imagine that he's been on the run and living rough, fair game to both Imperial and enemy forces alike.

I really like the prisoner model, but is that a terminator  :o
