Welcome back!

it's been a bit quiet so i thought i'd share a bit of a trainwreck with you guys!
we had a shelf collapse and while most of my toy soldiers were safe the box the Marines have been sleeping in got hit bad!

i'd actually been chatting with Alex about making a display base for the project and have been debating rebasing the lot; i had been tempted with a standard size and matching bases.
The Plan© is a round two-tiered base with a central column and on top of a motorised rotation base so it turns gently on it's own.

the central column will have alcoves with icon for the marine in front of it and there will be a lip on the lower level with chapter name / icon for the marine it's in front of; will grab a sketch later.

also wanna make a tome with the profile / background for each marine and an explanation of the project people can pick up and flip through.

so, do we think each chapter should have it's own styled base or should i keep 'em matching?
i make no apologies, i warned you my ability to roll ones was infectious...

Oh man, that sucks! I've seen some spectacular shelf collapses in my time. I think the worst was in GW when 4 shelves collapsed onto a warhound tital and shattered into it's respective atoms.

Those blades are going to be a sod to fix. Good luck mate.

Radu Lykan

reminds me of when my entire bfg fleet box fell on to the floor, so many chipped paint jobs, bfg battleships and grand cruisers are pretty heavy when falling on top of plastic cruisers :(
hope it doesnt turn into too much work and spurs you on to finish the rest.
on the display base, prob go with similar basing if possible as they will spend more time on display than on the table?

Alyster Wick

That's a tragedy about the shelf. It has me eye-balling my own office setup...

For the bases, why not try a unified theme for the bases but add a little flare to each one (some skulls and blood for the berzerker, etc). They could all have the same "floor" as it were with different embellishments.

You can add my commiserations to those you've already received; it's always tough when hard work gets destroyed.

On the bases - well, seeing as you've been talking about a display base/stand for a while, I think it would work best with a unified (but personalised) theme, so if you're going to have to take the opportunity to do some repairs anyway, it's probably the best time.

As a final note, I notice you've got 20 bases in your mock-up; are you planning on leaving ominous spaces for the Unknown Legions?
(That would certainly make it quite easy to choose an order for the legions - they could just be sorted numerically*).

*Although, to my shame, I can remember surprisingly few of the numbers for the legions.
S.Sgt Silva Birgen: "Good evening, we're here from the Adeptus Defenestratus."
Captain L. Rollin: "Nonsense. Never heard of it."
Birgen: "Pick a window. I'll demonstrate".

thanks guys; i know the marines got some lovin' at the GT so was a bit heartbreaking!
i think we're unanimous; a common basing style with some individual detailing (to fit their backgrounds) would look best

you've hit the nail on the head marco; thought now would be the time to sort out the display base as most are wonky on their own bases :)
also good spot; i'll be doing something special for the lost legions; already got 'em planned out which is a change for me!

threadomancy!
i've started the base; i've got a slew of deckplating and laid out the bases on the base

i plan on adding the same deck plating to each marine base but with some detailing for each marine.. for example, here's Kargos Bloodspitter rebased and repaired!

i'm working on repairing Forge Master Xa'phan of the Salamanders followed by Brother-Herald Claudius of the Ultramarines as i'm looking at running a Space Marine Campaign!

Nice work Gav! A Marine Campaign? That's going to be pretty brutal. I hope they'll be fighting something suitably nasty.

greenstuff_gav

hordes of chaff is the plan; games will be less fighting and more exploration / acheiving objectives :)
plus i'll be limiting effectiveness with a few simple rules too :)

here's the next two; i think tthey work together while keeping some individuality (the Salamanders' background is he lives on a desert world protecting the licals hence scattering some sand in there as example)

the (still un-named!) dark angel is next and possibly the Imperial Fist ans i'm itching to paint him!

here's the current rebasing effort; looking to scrounge some books for hte Word Bearers base and the Night Lord is next

started laying the plasticard on the first layer so will have something bigger to show soon! :)

while the display base has stalled (i'm trying to source a couplea the marine statue terrain pieces) i'm one marine short of the 18 first founding!

deciding which chapter to start next; i'm about 2/3 done wit ha commission that's taken up most of my time!

Hats off to you on this project. It just keeps getting more impressive.

I'm positive that Gav owns about 70% of all the Artemis models ever produced. Awe-inspiring collection, can't wait to see them finished.

As a side note - is your Salamander's power sword a bit wonky or is that just the picture? It looks like it has a bit of a droop to it.
An Inquisitor walks into a bar - he rolls D100 to see if he hits it.

hopefully it's the pic; the whole lot took a tumble and have been repaired; will have to check next time the box resurfaces (as they're packed away)

i did get a big marine statue so work can continue on the display base :D
