Sabotage!

Hello all, I'm new here (as it's not hard to tell). I've been looking into Inquisitor and thought this would be a great place to come and get some more information. I was originally drawn here by some of Kaled's 54 mm stuff I say floating around on the web and some of Molotov's Inq28 stuff on warseer. I was in the process of looking for inspiration for an Inquisitional Retinue for a warband for Death Squads (Using IG as counts as). Death Squads is a great game, but I am looking for a game with a bit more depth and fewer models, and Inq seems like a good option. I'd like to try out 28 (as I have a ten or so man very converted retinue that I am quite fond of), but I also love the detail in 54 (though I am thoroughly displeased by the lack of Sci-Fi stuff in the scale and the over-abundance of historical/ fantasy stuff.) and want to give it a try.

Thanks for letting me join!

Kaled

Welcome - I'm on my phone so I'll leave the big yellow welcome to someone else.

Regarding the lack of sci-fi models - it's a common complaint, but isn't really a problem. Many characters in GW artwork wear historical-style uniforms, so Napoleonic models can easily be brought into the 41st millenium with weapon swaps, bionics, purity seals and a few technological gizmos. Wild West models are perfect for characters from frontier worlds, bounty hunters and the like. Modern soldiers make great Guardsmen by giving them lasguns. And given the fact that 40k is more like fantasy in space than proper sci-fi, most fantasy models can easily be converted - in fact, historical and fantasy miniatures are probably more useful for Inquisitor than sci-fi ones. Have a look at some of the threads in the Painting & Modelling forum and you'll see what I mean.

You do make a very valid point, as most of the 40k stuff is very much grounded in history (Very easy to tell by looking at the IG range GW/FW produce). I will definitely take some time to browse through the modeling and painting section to get some inspiration. Thanks for the welcome and advice!

Spotting models suitable for Inq use is a competitive sport around here!

Welcome!

It's certainly true that many different manufacturers' models can be used for Inquisitor, whatever scale you play in. I know that for INQ28 I've used a number of Fantasy models - 40k is a techno-gothic universe, and so you can have models that sit almost anywhere on the spectrum from technological to savage (or even "techno-barbarians!")

Many models can be "40kified" with very little difficulty (and a large bitzbox!) so I would certainly encourage you to give things a try.

I would be very keen to see your "10 man converted retinue", though!

INQ28, done properly, is at least the equal of its big brother - and Mol is one of the expert proponents of "done properly".

Thanks for the replies guys!

I've taken an extended look at the painting and modeling thread, and I must say there are some pretty creative models done by the members here, and historical models look much more appealing now for 54mm.

28mm is where most of my experience lies, and I will agree Molotov, there are some wonderful fantasy bitz out there for conversions. I'm really looking forward to carving up a couple fantasy ghouls to turn to arco-flagellants (as I think the GW models are pretty awful).

I definitely will be able to get picks up of it relatively soon (the main obstacle is my camera is from 2001 and does not have good enough resolution for 28mm models), as I have all these "reward points" from my credit card, which are going to getting a decent camera. As my retinue isn't painted yet (nor is my fantasy army....but that's a different story), I figure starting a painting blog will keep me motivated. I some how managed to paint to a pretty high standard roughly 150 Steel Legion and Krieg guardsmen and some armor, but now I have trouble finding time to paint a single model.....

You don't need a high resolution camera to take pics of models, even 28mm ones - my camera is at least that old and is pretty low res by today's standards. Even low end cameras usually have a macro mode - the icon is usually a flower. Use that and you should be able to get pretty good results.

I had tried the macro before and hadn't had too much success with it one fateful (err frustrating...) day when I went through all my camera modes, but I gave it another whirl tonight and found a pretty had trick to get it to work relatively well (it kept giving me "focus too close" errors," so I focused the camera at a further range then physically moved it closer to the model to take a picture). Thanks for the reminder Kaled, I probably would not have bothered (or even remembered) about the macro feature without your post. After I finish up a bit of my Chemistry I'll start a modeling thread with a few pictures of what I have going!

Also, don't try to get too close to the model - take the photo from far enough back that the camera can focus. The model doesn't have to fill the frame. You can crop the picture afterwards to cut off the edges of the picture.

Another tip is to stand the model on a sheet of white paper then curve it up behind the model and prop it up against a wall or something. That way you just have the model against an unbroken field of white. You'll get a nice image and the camera should find it easier to focus on the model as it'll be the only thing in frame.

If you can, take photos using sunlight rather than artificial light and it's better if you can avoid using the flash. You should still be able to get decent pics with artificial light and/or the flash if the weather isn't good enough though.

Experiment for a while and I'm sure you'll be able to get some good pictures.
